Dubai VDX Inaugurates World's First Purpose-Built eVTOL Vertiport

August 26, 2026

Dubai Launches VDX, the World's First Commercial eVTOL Vertiport

Dubai has officially inaugurated VDX, the world's first purpose-built commercial vertiport designed specifically for electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Developed by Skyports Infrastructure, the facility has received regulatory certification from the United Arab Emirates' General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), marking a significant milestone in the commercialization of Urban Air Mobility (UAM).

The vertiport is equipped with two dedicated landing pads and high-powered DC fast charging infrastructure to support rapid aircraft turnaround. With 3,100 square meters of space, VDX is designed to serve up to 170,000 passengers annually and will function as the primary hub within Dubai's planned air taxi network, with three additional vertiports currently under development.

Strategic Impact on the eVTOL and UAM Industry

This development represents a critical transition for eVTOL aircraft from conceptual designs to operational reality. For B2B buyers and suppliers in the UAM ecosystem, this certification demonstrates that the necessary infrastructure, operational standards, and regulatory frameworks are now in place for commercial services. This means that demand for eVTOL aircraft, batteries, charging systems, and maintenance equipment is expected to accelerate as other cities look to replicate Dubai's model.

  • Regulatory certification provides a template for other jurisdictions to develop their own vertiport standards.
  • The facility's charging and maintenance infrastructure sets a benchmark for operational efficiency.
  • Planned network expansion indicates a long-term commitment to UAM, creating sustained business opportunities.

According to Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports Infrastructure, 'This certification is a defining moment for Advanced Air Mobility, demonstrating that the infrastructure, operational standards and regulatory frameworks required for commercial eVTOL services are now a reality.' Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, added that the UAE is 'actively shaping' the future of aviation and establishing new international benchmarks.

Supplier Solution Note

eVTOL operations demand high-performance, reliable batteries for safety and efficiency. Our rapid prototyping and flexible manufacturing for drone batteries can support the rigorous certification and customized needs of the urban air mobility sector.
